Week One: Flowers and Ferns

September 27, 2011 § Leave a comment

What a lovely week of dyeing! We spent the afternoon in the dye lab boiling up a lot of things that looked and smelled like beautiful teas and made some great colors.  Sally had warned us beforehand about the dangers of boiling goldenrod (when you think about it, you’re really just making a concentrated hay fever steam).  We took the necessary precautions- shut the door, turned on the ventilation system, kept a lid on our pots- but we still felt it a little bit (though there’s a chance that’s just paranoia).  Goldenrod makes some beautiful colors, but we definitely learned that it’s worth it to take some extra precautions when you’re boiling it.
