Week Two: Lichen and Fungi Gathering

September 28, 2011 § Leave a comment

We finally get to dye with the lichen we collected at the beginning of the summer!

In June we spent a long weekend volunteering at a camp way up north in Harrington, Maine.  The trees were wonderfully encrusted with lichen, but we dared not steal (except from firewood!) and we patiently sorted them by their genus/by how wild they looked.

We will also be dyeing with mushrooms we collected over the last week as it was so rainy in Providence and we got a few from Lincoln Woods and a few from Freedom, New Hampshire.

Also, lichen is just amazing and strange– http://web.uvic.ca/~stucraw/part1.html#Lichens_as_dyes (please go through and read the folklore)
